Are Canva Resumes ATS Friendly?

Some are and some are not, and the difference is rarely the tool. It is the template you picked and one setting on the download screen.

The short answer

A Canva resume is a PDF like any other. If the text in it is real, selectable text in a sensible order, a parser can read it. If it is not, no parser can, and the design is irrelevant.

The trouble is that design tools make the risky choices easy and the safe ones invisible. Most of the templates are built for how a page looks, and an applicant tracking system never looks at the page. It reads the text layer underneath.

The setting that matters most

When you download as PDF, Canva offers an option to flatten the file. A flattened PDF turns your text into a picture of text. It looks identical on screen and contains no readable words at all.

Leave it off. Download as a standard PDF, then open the file and try to select a sentence. If the cursor highlights words, you have text. If it draws a box around the whole page, you have an image, and a parser will read an empty resume.

What the templates do to the text layer

Two columns and sidebars. The most common Canva layout. The visual columns are separate text boxes, and the order those boxes come out in is decided by how the template was built, not by where they sit on the page. Your skills sidebar can land in the middle of a job. See are two-column resumes ATS friendly for the detail.

Icons instead of labels. A phone glyph next to a number reads fine to a person. To a parser the glyph is either nothing or a stray character, and if the number itself sits in a decorative box it may come out detached from your name.

Skill bars and rating dots. Five dots for Python is a graphic. The parser gets the word Python, if that is text, and nothing about the dots. That is no loss, because a self-rating means nothing to a recruiter either.

Letter-spaced headings. Widely tracked capitals look elegant, and some exports write each letter as its own positioned character. Extracted, EXPERIENCE can come out as E X P E R I E N C E, which is not a heading any parser recognises.

Text in graphics. A name set inside a decorative shape, or headings that are part of an image element, do not exist as text at all.

How to check your file

Open the downloaded PDF, select everything, copy, and paste into a plain text editor. Then read it as if you were the machine.

Is your email there, intact, near your name? Do the section headings appear as whole words? Does each job title sit next to its own dates, or has a column of skills landed between them?

Our free parse preview does the same thing with a real parser and shows you the result. It costs nothing.

If it fails

You do not have to leave Canva. Pick a single-column template, or delete the sidebar and move its contents into the main column: contact details at the top, skills as a plain list under a heading that says Skills.

Replace icons with the words they stand for, set headings as normal text without wide letter spacing, and download unflattened. Then run the test again.

If you would rather start from a structure that is known to read cleanly, this one is plain enough to rebuild in any tool.

What we cannot tell you

Parsers differ, and no one outside a company knows exactly how theirs is configured. A file that extracts cleanly is not a guarantee. It is the removal of a reason to fail before a person has read a word, which is the part you control.
